The Digital Data Exchange, LLC ("DDEX") was originally incorporated by a consortium of eleven companies:
DDEX is not involved in the standardisation of copy or content protections schemes, copyright protections schemes, codecs or other supporting technology. Similarly, DDEX is not involved in the standardisation of any aspect of the licensing of media content and rights.
DDEX is a membership organisation, incorporated as a limited liability company operating under the laws of Delaware. DDEX is governed by a Board of Directors the members of which are representatives of the Charter Members of DDEX. The current organisations represented on the Board are the record companies, EMI Music, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group; music rights societies from France, Spain, the UK and the US, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), The Harry Fox Agency Inc. (HFA), The MCPS-PRS Alliance Limited, Sociedad General de Autores y Editores, Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs et Editeurs de Musique (SACEM); and the music service providers, LLC, Apple Computer Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Orange, RealNetworks Inc. and Telefonica.
Membership of DDEX is open to any business entity with an interest in digital media content but with the initial focus being on entities whose business is centred on music and music related assets. This would include record labels, music rights societies; producer rights organizations; digital service providers/mobile service providers; digital music aggregators; broadcasters; music publishers; technology providers; providers of business services in these areas. There are three tiers of membership; a maximum of 15 Charter Members; Contributing Members and Participating Members.

DDEX issues Data Mismatch Message Suite Standard which provides a uniform mechanism for parties to inform their business partners about data mismatches or data errors being detected when receiving a DDEX message.
